July 2018 Newsletter

CherryAnn Coballes takes the opportunity to perfect her skills by working USAV in our traditional "off season." It is important that SAVRA officials understand the importance of constantly looking to improve their craft.

LAST CALL: Referee, Line Judge Training

July 12 at West Valley High School
We have organized this important clinic for you as a means to help you prepare yourself for the season just ahead. If you haven't signed up for on-court mentoring, or just to dust off the cobwebs, please do so TODAY. Our annual tune up and training at the SFCC high school team camp is July 12, 4-9 p.m. at West Valley High School. Come for a hour or two, or the whole shebang. But come! Please pre-register for this free clinic with Barb Twohig at btonml@gmail.com. Your assigners and Board of Directors are aware of those who are committed to improvement and being prepared for the upcoming season by attending this training. Those officials wishing to be rated this season should consider attendance a must. A non-mentored high school jamboree July 23 at Mt. Spokane is available for anyone who'd like to referee. For this, please contact Twohig, as well.

SAVRA Coats & Bags Available, WOA Shirts, Too

Ron Walker will place an order for new navy SAVRA referee coats and bags on Aug. 1. Both sport the new SAVRA logo, which appears on the bottom of this newsletter. Same jacket and bag styles as our current ones, but with the new brand embroidered on them. Cost is $35 for the jackets, $25 for the bags. Place your order by Aug. 1 to have them for the start of the season. Ron also will order the new, heavier-weight WOA officials' shirts. Email Ron at championsnsports@usa.com. Thanks Ron for making these and many other reffing items available to our members. If you need to order the blue, grey or white college/USAV officials' shirts, order online at VBOfficialsGear.com

Surveys: Please complete these 1-minute questionnaires TODAY

The recently appointed Training Development Committee has created a series of three 1-minute surveys to better assess where our training programs need adjustments. Twenty-eight of you have not responded to either of the first two surveys. PLEASE, click this link and take those surveys https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DJKJTD2. A third -- and last -- survey will be disseminated to you shortly. President Patty Kells will be contacting those members who have not taken the first two surveys, stressing the reasons for participating in these surveys and the value to our association. Please, save her 28 calls.

Changes in Federation, NCAA Rules Outlined

National Federation rule changes this season are primarily administrative. The unnecessary delay mechanic has been clarified; teams may warm up with balls on their side between sets; no team member can support a player who achieves an illegal advantage (including bench personnel); added clarification on R2s keeping  coaches in the replacement zone, and no closer than 6 feet to the sideline; among others.

NCAA rule changes include, among others:

  • The maximum time for intermission between sets 2 and 3 reduced to 5 minutes.
  • A libero may be added to the lineup sheet after submission…prior to first beckon for service...without penalty.
  • If a duplicate number was submitted for libero and another position, the lineup may be corrected prior to the first beckon for serve…without penalty.
  • Challenge Review System was changed…touch and in/out are now considered to be one reviewable challenge, and the attack line was added as a reviewable decision (feet only).

To view more extensive highlights of the rule changes and points of emphases, at both high school and college level, go to https://www.savravb.org/news/ .
