May 2018 Newsletter

SAVRA’s new logo represents a clean, fresh, simple, uncomplicated, bold presentation of our organization and its officials.

SAVRA’s New Brand

The SAVRA logo with net and whistle, which has served us well over the past 25 years, is being retired. Before you is the new SAVRA look. This logo was designed for us by local graphic artist Nicole Harrison of Design Pal Graphics. Please feel free to wear your current SAVRA jacket and carry your SAVRA bags until you’re ready to replace them. At that time, we’ll have new options available with the new look.

SAVRA Cares

Because SAVRA Cares, the Board has established a fund within the SAVRA account to help members who suffer from extraordinary financial burden, not of their own doing. More details on this to come.

SAVRA Survey Responses Still Out There

Of our 85 members, 47 of you responded to our first survey. We expected better. Thanks to those of you who replied. It’s not too late, though. Respond to the first survey today https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DJKJTD2 . A second in this series of three one-minute surveys will be coming via email soon.

SFCC Summer Training Opportunity July 12

SAVRA’s holding an on-court training session, Thursday, July 12, 4-9 p.m. at West Valley High School. Part of the SFCC summer high school camp, SAVRA officials have a chance to referee and line judge in this low-pressure setting, each with an experienced mentor to help you improve your game. It is an expectation of the Board of Directors that any beginning to mid-level SAVRA official avail themselves to this training opportunity; and experienced officials contribute as mentors. You need not stay for all 5 hours, but pick a time and come on out. Please register as a camper or mentor for by contacting Trainer Barb Twohig at btonml@gmail.com.

The Art of Checking Lineups

Often, when the lineup check is completed by the R2, we lose track of the position of the player the libero replaces, and sometimes that libero goes to the incorrect spot. Rusty Wellman reminds us how to be more aware of that initial replacement in a set. Go to: www.savravb.org/news

Uniform Shirts for 2018

For all Washington varsity high school matches, the approved WOA sublimated shirt – long or short sleeved – must be worn by the R1 and R2 this year. Plain white polo shirts are permissible for line judges and scorekeepers, although SAVRA recommends the WOA shirt be worn by all on varsity high school matches. Our local uniform provider, Ron Walker, is taking orders for the fall. To order a WOA shirt, email Ron at championsnsports@usa.com no later than July 31.

For all college matches, the new PAVO/USA uniform shirt is required for R1, R2 and LJs. It comes in blue, grey and white. If you choose to buy just one, blue is the preference. Both R1 and R2 must wear the same color, and both LJs must be in the same color, but not necessarily the color of the officials. If all four have the same color, please wear that color. To order PAVO/USA shirts, go to www.vbofficialsgear.com.

Clarification on Officials’ Jewelry

WOA Rule 4, Section 1, Article 6, states: ‘Jewelry shall not be worn by players during warmups and/or competition.’ As officials and role models of the rules, conspicuous jewelry is not allowed but a ring and/or discreet earrings may be worn. That means no dangling earrings, necklaces or bracelets. This is the same expectation of college officials.
