Sept. 16 On-Court Training
Focuses on R2, Ball-Handling
The high school and college training classes are combining this Sunday for work on R2 positioning and visioning, as well as ball handling . . . what do we call and what don’t we call; what to look for. Dress to play if you are so inclined. Also, everyone planning to attend this joint HS/College Training session is asked to bring their red and yellow cards that will be used when we get to the "What's your call" section.
The Basic training class will focus on R2 responsibilities and rotations.
Response to the first of our three on-court training sessions Aug. 26 was resoundingly positive, and we hope to see every SAVRA member Sunday, 5 p.m. on Martin Centre Court. Enter through the loading dock door between McCarthey and Martin centers at GU, from the south parking lot.
Reveal Yourselves
For those who have not loaded a picture of yourself in Arbiter, please do so immediately. Too many of our officials have failed to meet this obligation, and your partners are left unsure who to look for when arriving at a gym. This is a professional courtesy to all those you will work with. To add a picture, go to your Arbitersports website and log in. Click on your picture in the upper right-hand corner, then click on "My Account." Click on the green arrow under your picture/image holder. Then click on the “change picture” link and follow the prompts to change/insert your picture.
Tracking for Taxes . . . A Friendly Reminder
Be sure to record your mileage to and from matches, SAVRA meetings and training sessions as all are tax deductible. Uniform cleaning is also tax deductible.
Zag VB Matches Free to SAVRA Officials
Gonzaga University offers free admission to all home volleyball matches for SAVRA officials. Simply go to the ticket counter in Martin Centre and give them your name. If you bring a guest(s), please pay for them. GU offers this perk to help us offer another venue for training. You’ll see some of the top officials in the West.

ALL HANDS ON DECK:
Sheridan Classic Sept. 28-29
All hands -- and whistles -- are needed for the Linda Sheridan Classic, Sept. 28-29. This is the largest high school tournament in the state, drawing more than 50 teams to four Spokane gyms. Please do everything you can to make Saturday, Sept. 29, in particular, available for this tourney. Odds are, you'll have a blast. If you'd like to practice line judging, volunteer at any of the gym sites. Your referees will be glad you did.
First Payment Delayed by Arbiter Upgrades
The first round of payments for matches worked has been delayed by some upgrades from Arbiter in regards to billing for travel. Hence invoices were late getting out to schools, and it usually takes schools at least 30 days to process, print and mail checks back to us. So we ask for your patience. If you have a hardship that requires payment sooner than early October to meet your obligations, please email Treasurer Phil Robinson (spokanepilot@hotmail.com) with a requested amount and reason for your hardship, which is kept confidential. Also, if you are in a position where you don’t require payment until the end of the season – and would love a BIG CHUNK for Christmas – also let Phil know.
Quick Hits
High school pre-match warmups are 8-5-5-2, except for the Northeast 2B schools we assign: Davenport, Northwest Christian, St. George’s, Wilbur Creston, Liberty, Lind-Ritzville-Sprague and Reardan, which have adopted the new state tournament warmup protocol of 6-6-4-4, with no shared court . . . however, be reasonable in allowing some quick shared court time while you conduct the flip and complete your pre-match meetings as an aid in helping the athletes get loose.
Please complete any missing WIAA and/or PAVO requirements for clinics and testing this week.
Online store for uniform items and equipment is at www.savravb.org. Thanks to Ron Walker for manning the store, and to SAVRA webmaster Jodi Murphy for continually updating our site.
