Training Opportunities Abound, Take Advantage
Whew, summer has arrived. Time to refresh. For some, a few national volleyball tournaments are still to be called. But for most, this is a time to think about your goals for the fall season, what you want to improve upon and what you can do to become the best partner you can be. Please consider these valuable training opportunities at little or no cost, all offered locally, to help you step up your game. Those who assign you will be taking notes on who chooses to participate in self-improvement initiatives.
SFCC Training Camp, July 11, 4:30-9 p.m., West Valley High School
This high school camp offers almost 5 hours of competition on many courts. It allows officials at any level of experience to work out the bugs, receive quality mentoring from experienced mentors, and ask questions that might be plaguing you. You can work up, down, on the corners, scoring, or simply observe and ask questions of your mentor. Spend an hour, three or more. Your choice. Come any time during that 4.5-hour span. To sign up for this free mentoring, email Barb Twohig at btonml@gmail.com.
NASO National Conference, July 28-30, Davenport Grand Hotel;
Officiate Washington Day July 27
Training in Transition Sports Summit is the National Association of Sports Officials’ one national training conference this year. And it’s in Spokane for the first time ever. The website says, “Teach them right now, or risk them being wrong later. We’ll focus on all aspects of officiating training, from established programs to innovative efforts, as well as a special focus on how current thinking on training impacts officials just getting started in the avocation.” A great resource for advanced officials. Learn more at https://www.sportsofficiatingsummit.com/program/schedules/. In addition, WOA is staging Officiate Washington Day, July 27, an all-sport workshop that includes two general sessions, four breakout sessions, the association’s annual awards luncheon and an end-of-day social on the patio bar of The Davenport Grand Hotel. Now’s the Time to Order Uniforms
If you’d like to order a new Federation-approved WOA high school officials shirt, or any officials equipment, you may do so online at www.savravb.org. You must have the official shirt to officiate varsity matches. If you plan to work as a referee or line judge on any college matches this season, you must have the NCAA/PAVO approved college referees’ shirt.
