Hirayama Inducted into Hall of Fame, Annual ...

Alan Hirayama, a 33-year veteran volleyball referee, became the 11th inductee into the SAVRA Hall of Fame at the association’s annual awards banquet in November 2024. Hirayama has served as president, trainer, assistant assigner and assigner during his ongoing career, working high school and Division I college matches for the Pac-12, West Coast and Big Sky conferences.

Nominate Yourself for a Board Position for 2019

Please consider nominating yourself, or other SAVRA members, for open positions on the Board of Directors. You can do that by emailing a letter of application to Vice President Keith Ward at sandkward@comcast.net. Or, nominations will be taken from the floor at SAVRA General Membership meetings Oct. 21 and 28. An electronic ballot will be emailed to each member Oct. 29. Voting concludes Nov. 3. Newly elected board members will be announced at our final meeting Nov. 4.

SEPT. 16 ON-COURT TRAINING
FOCUSES ON R2, BALL-HANDLING

The high school and college training classes are combining this Sunday for work on R2 positioning and visioning, as well as ball handling . . . what do we call and what don’t we call; what to look for. Dress to play if you are so inclined. Also, everyone planning to attend this joint HS/College Training session is asked to bring their red and yellow cards that will be used when we get to the "What's your call" section.

National Training Clinic, First Day
of SAVRA Training August 12

This annual NCAA/PAVO national training clinic is Sunday, Aug. 12, 9:30 am-1:30 pm in Jundt Auditorium, 200 W. DeSmet, on Gonzaga’s west side of campus. Enter through the east side of the front face of Jundt under the brick canopy. With Sharp Avenue under construction, it is best to take Division/Ruby, turn east onto DeSmet, which T’s after 1 block at the Jundt Art Center and Museum. Park in the Jundt parking lot immediately in front of the building, to your right. AVOID HAMILTON.

LAST CALL: REFEREE, LINE JUDGE TRAINING

We have organized this important clinic for you as a means to help you prepare yourself for the season just ahead. If you haven't signed up for on-court mentoring, or just to dust off the cobwebs, please do so TODAY. Our annual tune up and training at the SFCC high school team camp is July 12, 4-9 p.m. at West Valley High School. Come for a hour or two, or the whole shebang. But come! Please pre-register for this free clinic with Barb Twohig at btonml@gmail.com. Your assigners and Board of Directors are aware of those who are committed to improvement and being prepared for the upcoming season by attending this training. Those officials wishing to be rated this season should consider attendance a must. A non-mentored high school jamboree July 23 at Mt. Spokane is available for anyone who'd like to referee. For this, please contact Twohig, as well.  

SAVRA COATS & BAGS AVAILABLE, WOA SHIRTS, TOO

Ron Walker will place an order for new navy SAVRA referee coats and bags on Aug. 1. Both sport the new SAVRA logo, which appears on the bottom of this newsletter. Same jacket and bag styles as our current ones, but with the new brand embroidered on them. Cost is $35 for the jackets, $25 for the bags. Place your order by Aug. 1 to have them for the start of the season. Ron also will order the new, heavier-weight WOA officials' shirts. Email Ron at championsnsports@usa.com. Calling all Refs, Line Judges to July 12 SFCC Camp at WVHS

SAVRA's summer referee and line judge training camp, run concurrently with SFCC's summer high school camp, is your chance to get on the stand or on the floor, officiate with a mentor standing by, and learn how to improve your game -- from presentation and technique, to applying the correct rules in a particular situation. Ask all the questions you want. We are NOT evaluating you, we are nurturing your development as an official or line judge. Registration for this event has been low. Newbies and mid-level officials alike, please join us as we help prepare you for the upcoming season. Mentors, this is your time to give back.

Line Judge, Scorer Training Added Aug. 19

Training and certification for line judges and scorers is scheduled Sunday, Aug. 19, at Gonzaga University's Jepson Center, Room 014. Training for scorers is scheduled 1-2:30 p.m., line judges 2:30-4 p.m. Anyone hoping to line judge or score this year should attend the appropriate clinic.
